Shir Hamaalot (also known as Song of Ascents, Songs of Degrees, Songs of Steps) is actually fifteen of the Psalms. Four of these songs were written by David, and one by Solomon, the rest being anonymous. The origin of the name is in the act of climbing up to Jerusalem, when they were likely sung.
